Leave Me the Love by Melodie Yvonne

All rash anger is heart murder and it scars my soul
Just tryin’ hard not to be salty’s harder than you know
And every time that I lash out I just regret again
Oh how on earth can you love me when I’m so full of sin

Oh how on earth can you love me when I’m so full of sin
Oh why on earth do I lay down and let this evil win
Please Lord help me and give me strength from heaven up above
Oh Lord take out the bad in me and just leave me the love

Oh please Lord will you heal my soul and tell me what to do
Oh Lord I’m here to follow you with everything I do
But every time I let my heart start wanderin’ again
Lord how on earth can you love me when I’m so full of sin

Oh how on earth can you love me when I’m so full of sin
Oh why on earth do I lay down and let this evil win
Please Lord help me and give me strength from heaven up above
Oh Lord take out the bad in me and just leave me the love

  • Tryin’ to Carry On

Tryin’ to Carry On by Melodie Yvonne

When it gets dark and hard to breathe you’re standing right in front of me
And I feel just a bit of calm ‘til I remember you moved on

Then it gets dark and hard to breathe because you’re all I want to see
Now everything I love is gone, and I’m just tryin’ to carry on

I’m reachin’ out, but you’re not there
I guess you never really cared
So why’s it so hard not to love you
Why’s there no one else above you?

    I don’t know, but I’ll keep wishin’
    That I’ll finally forget and
Find my heart somethin’ to do
Besides to sit and wait for you

When it gets dark and hard to breathe you’re standing right in front of me
And I feel just a bit of calm ‘til I remember you moved on

Then it gets dark and hard to breathe because you’re all I want to see
Now everything I love is gone, and I’m just tryin’ to carry on

Now everything you gave me’s gone
And everything feels oh so wrong
But somehow I just don’t regret you
And I just might not forget you

Still my broken heart can’t smile
And patchin’ up sure takes a while
So what’s there left for me to do
    Except accept we’re finally through

When it gets dark and hard to breathe you’re standing right in front of me
And I feel just a bit of calm ‘til I remember you moved on

Then it gets dark and hard to breathe because you’re everything I need
Now everything I love is gone, and I’m just tryin’ to carry on

Arsonist on Fire by Melodie Yvonne

    I wanna save your life
But I just can’t spend all of mine
Putting out fires for an arsonist
    Just having a good time

    I wanted to protect you
And make things go your way
But you sabotage them all yourself
And now I just can’t stay

    I wanted you to love
    But you just love yourself
And you take and take until you’re full
    From everybody else

    I wanted you to be
    The greatness that I see
But I took those rose tint lenses off
    And you’re the enemy

    I wanna save your life
But I just can’t spend all of mine
Putting out fires for an arsonist
    Just having a good time

  • Just His Toy

Just His Toy by Melodie Yvonne

I’m walkin’ around in a body of flesh so of course I’ll be tempted most times
Emotions run rampant and my heart lies so of course I keep falling love blind
But all of these days all I can say is I wish you were here by my side
And I rewind time every day in my mind just so I can look in your eyes

Lord please help me get over that boy that just smiled at me and took over my world
Lord please help me get over that boy ‘cause I wanna love him but I’m just his toy

I’m walkin’ around feelin’ a mess ever since I walked outta his life
I’m walkin’ around and feel in a trance ‘cause I can’t tell what’s real and what’s lies
But the one thing I know is the way that I feel every time that I look in his eyes
And it still breaks my heart to be this far apart and to leave without saying goodbye

Lord please help me get over that boy that just smiled at me and took over my world
Lord please help me get over that boy ‘cause I wanna love him but I’m just his toy

Oh Lord please help me get over that boy that just smiled at me and took over my world
Lord please help me get over this boy ‘cause I want him to love me but I’m just his toy

  • A Thousand Real Goodbyes

Originally published online Sept 28, 2018 & in the collection Photographic Memories: Deux Mille Dix-Huit — available here

A Thousand Real Goodbyes by Melodie Yvonne

No one else can stay here
    There’ll be no more friends
    I hate being this lonely
But I’m toeing my wit’s end

    It’s not just paranoia
That got me where I am
    It’s a thousand fake I love yous
That just stopped where they began

    It’s a thousand fake I love yous
    A thousand real goodbyes
It’s a thousand sighs of apathy
    A thousand tears I cried
It’s a thousand words you said to me
    That made a thousand lies
    It’s a thousand fake I love yous
    And a thousand real goodbyes

There’ll be no more light here
To guide you where to go
There’s no more open door for you
To shield you from the cold

And there’ll be no more heartache
    From me this time around
‘Cause my heads done being in the clouds
My feet are on the ground

    It’s a thousand fake I love yous
    A thousand real goodbyes
It’s a thousand sighs of apathy
    A thousand tears I cried
It’s a thousand words you said to me
    That made the thousand lies
    It’s a thousand fake I love yous
    And my final real goodbye

  • The End of Michigan

Originally published online Sept 26, 2018 & in the collection Photographic Memories: Deux Mille Dix-Huit — available here

The End of Michigan by Melodie Yvonne

Time moves too fast, too fast in this state
Time moves so fast, it moves too fast to waste
But take my hand, and we’ll ride
We’ll ride to the end, the end of Michigan

Warm times the sun it follows me
Wish I didn’t have to come down
Like the leaves fall to the ground
Like the birds are flyin’ south

But your love that follows me
Keeps my head up in the clouds
Keeps my heart all safe and sound
    Keeps me comin’ back around

    So take my hand again
And we’ll ride to the end
Yeah we’ll ride to the end
    The end of Michigan

See the summer in my heart
It still warms the coldest part
    It’s fallin’ here in Michigan
But our hearts warm ‘til the end

Yeah just take my hand again
And we’ll ride on to the end
    Together here in Michigan
    Just take my hand

Time moves too fast, too fast in this state
Time moves so fast, it moves too fast to waste
    But it’ll all be alright
‘Cause we are not alone tonight

Your hand is still in my hand tight
    And it’ll all be alright
    On this chilly Autumn night
    Here in Michigan

  • Know What It’s Like

Originally published online Sept 24, 2018 & in the collection Photographic Memories: Deux Mille Dix-Huit — available here

Know What It’s Like by Melodie Yvonne

Do you know what it’s like to have a gun to your head
Stuck there in the middle of the night by a friend?
Do you know what it’s like to sleep with a knife
After some worthless piece of shit threatens your life?

    Well I do
    Yeah I do

Do you know what it’s like to fear for your life
When you’re stuck wide awake in your bed every night?

    Well I do
    Yeah I do

Do you know what it’s like to be raped by a friend
And then told that it’s mostly your fault in the end?

    Well I do
    Yeah I do

Do you know what it’s like when meth takes a child’s life
And you can’t bring them back with all of your might?
Do you know what it’s like when you think it’s your fault
‘Cause you lived in denial ‘til everything’s lost?

    Well I do
    Yeah I do

Do you know what it’s like to reach your wit’s end
And not even care if you have any friends?

    Well I do
    Yeah I do

But do you know what it’s like to get over your fright
When you realize that these bad things don’t define life?

    Well I do
    Yeah I do

  • Human Just Like Me

Originally published online Sept 17, 2018 & in the collection Photographic Memories: Deux Mille Dix-Huit — available here

Human Just Like Me by Melodie Yvonne

It breaks my heart still every day to know that I won’t see your face
I still see it inside my mind and my heart aches still all the time
I don’t know how I loved so much for someone who I’ve never touched
I didn’t know that there could be another human just like me

Your eyes match mine with every step even though they’re in my head
Your heartbeat’s tempo matches mine even when it’s outta line
Your smile it smiles right back at me, your arms wrap ’round but set me free
You still dance ‘round inside my mind and my heart aches still all the time

See this is life not in my dreams and nothing here is what it seems
This world has made us strive for perfect ‘til it isn’t even worth it
And your heart still touches mine but runs away still every time
And all I have is in my dreams and this worn pile of memories

It breaks my heart still every day to know that I won’t see your face
I still see it inside my mind and my heart aches still all the time
I don’t know how I love so much for someone who I’ve never touched
I didn’t know that there could be another human just like me

  • Everybody’s Got the Right to Not Drop the Mic

Originally published online Sept 14, 2018 & in the collection Photographic Memories: Deux Mille Dix-Huit — available here

Everybody’s Got the Right to Not Drop the Mic by Melodie Yvonne

Written with love for Iconoclast Open Mic Poetry at the Irving Theater ❤ ❤ ❤
A huge thanks to Devon Ginn for humoring and helping me with my first performance piece 🙂

Every single creature in this great big world
Comes in many different shapes and sizes
But there is one thing that is running deep throughout each single one
And that is they all share confusion ‘bout the mic stand

Just turned it one direction and if it doesn’t go
Turn it in the other ‘til it loosens
And then just slide it up or maybe slide it down
Then turn it right on back until it tightens

Now don’t you be embarrassed if you gotta ask for help
‘Cause each and every one of us human
And no matter short or tall or even giant Fezzik sized
Everybody has the right to use the mic stand

Again just turned it one direction and if it doesn’t go
Turn it in the other ‘til it loosens
And then just slide it up or maybe slide it down
Then turn it right on back until it tightens

    One more time!

Just turned it one direction and if it doesn’t go
Turn it in the other ‘til it loosens
And then just slide it up or maybe slide it down
And then turn it right on back until it tightens
