    Lovesick by Melodie Yvonne

Why do I gotta be so damned lovesick like this
Hopin’, prayin’, wishin’ all for just one kiss
Your face behind my eyes already just like this
Why do I gotta be so damned lovesick like this

How am I so nervous I can hardly breathe
How’d do you do that thing that makes my knees so weak
How is it your smile can make my heart skip beats
That gleam inside your eyes’ll be the end of me

Why do I gotta be so damned lovesick like this
Hopin’, prayin’, wishin’ all for just one kiss
Your face behind my eyes already just like this
Why do I gotta be so damned lovesick like this

Your aura’s straight and narrow and it soothes my soul
After you make my vibes go crazy though you’ll never know
Just gotta hold it all together shortly ‘til you go
Then back to dreamin’ ‘bout you when I’m all alone

Just maybe don’t get close and we can just be friends
Don’t worry ‘cause I pack a telephoto lens
It’s not my fault I’m scared to play this game again
It’s just that I can tell that you were born to win

Why do I gotta be so damned lovesick like this
Hopin’, prayin’, wishin’ all for just one kiss
Your face behind my eyes already just like this
Why do I gotta be so damned lovesick like this

Love For Today by Melodie Yvonne

You don’t have to give me the world
Just please don’t take it away
You don’t have to tell me you love me
If there’s no love there’s nothin’ to say

You don’t have to come here to save me
Or promise to take me away
Just please love me here in this moment
So I can have love for today

I don’t need your friends or your money
    What I want’s what money can’t buy
I just wanna feel your arms wrapped around me
And feel how I look through your eyes

You don’t have to take time to save me
Or promise to take me away
Just please love me here in this moment
So I can have love for today

You don’t have to make me no promise
Just be here if only one day
Just lie to me here in this moment
And let me forget you can’t stay

Outside the Walls by Melodie Yvonne
(Originally written for Creative Writing at JCHS in October 1993)

As I walk out my door, I feel the same as any other time.  I know that when I leave the security of my home I must, again, confront the outside world.  The impregnable walls of my room are now gone.

Today is somewhat dreary.  I cannot wander far for it is raining.  I am content to sit and gaze at the world from the quiet seclusion of my garage.

I look around and noticed I am alone.  No one else has ventured from their homes today.  There are no children playing or people walking as there would be on any given sunny day.  There is no noise except the tapping of the rain hitting the ground, and an occasional vehicle passing by.  Everything appears dead.  All of the leaves have fallen from the trees and lay upon the wet ground.

The sky is gray and unpenetrated by any sunlight.  I become mesmerized by a single puddle.  With each drop of rain, a momentary circle is formed, and then disappears only to be replaced by another.

Today, although really no different from any other day, seems a little more real in my mind.  All it really takes is just a moment to step back and look at the world from a different view to appreciate it more.  I guess everything looks a little bit better when one looks at it from a distance.

    Understated by Melodie Yvonne

    My frustration here is understated
But I’m so tired of being berated
I just want that piece of pie
That got everyone else here high

I’m sick of being not quite real
It’s not fair I don’t get to feel
I’m sick of having to just take
All the while just tryin’ to make it

I’m tired of having to turn a cheek
Stop treating me like I am weak
It’s every ounce of strength I got
To not turn into what I’m not

It’s every little bit of soul
To keep from losing all control
    It’s every ounce of energy
To keep me from destroying me

So please stop jumping on this wagon
To kick me off when I’m still draggin’
    Please stop disrespecting me
    Before I can’t just turn a cheek

    Understand that I’m still real
    Even if I’m not ideal
    Understand that I am human
And you hurt with what you’re doin’

    My frustration’s understated
Please don’t take your chance to weigh in
Please just go and let me be
I don’t need help destroying me.

Make the Night by Melodie Yvonne

I’m lost inside and don’t know why
And it just breaks my heart
I look and look most every day
    But still I fall apart

    I spin around in circles
All the while just standing still
But I’d rather be all crazy
Than just hide it all with pills

    I don’t know what I’m gonna do
If I can’t make this right
But now baby if you help me
Maybe I can make the night

I’m running far away from you
    But I’m still standing here
I’m wasting so much precious time
    Just paralyzed with fear

    I’m wide-awake in nightmares
Though I just can’t sleep to dream
And I’m stuck here in your shadows
    Trying to cling to anything

    I don’t know what I’m gonna do
To get through this long life
But now baby if you hold me
Maybe I can make the night

No I don’t know what I’m gonna do
If I can’t make this right
    I don’t know what I’m gonna do
To get through this long life

No I don’t know what I’m gonna do
If I can’t make this right
But now baby if you help me
Maybe I can make the night

Yeah now baby if you help me
Maybe I can make the night

Tryin’ to Forgive You by Melodie Yvonne

I hope somebody ruins your life
The way you fucked up mine
I hope you fall in love with
    Someone that’s the same alike

I wish I could just hurt you
The same way that you hurt me
But I’m tryin’ to forgive you
So that I can set me free

I wish I was as good at playin’
    All your selfish games
    Your constant string of sorrys
    Knot into a tired refrain

    And every single time that
I can finally start to breathe
You do some fucked up shit
And knock the wind right out of me

I wish I could just hurt you
The same way that you hurt me
I’m begging God to help me
‘Cause I know this isn’t me

I wish I could just hurt you
The same way that you hurt me
But I’m tryin’ to forgive you
So that I can set me free

Originally published online March 30, 2019 & in the collection Photographic Memories: Deux Mille Dix-Neuf available here

All I Am is All I Was by Melodie Yvonne

Sometimes you’re still all I see when I close my eyes
Sometimes all these thoughts of you just keep me paralyzed
I don’t know why it’s been so long and I’m not over you
Especially when a bit of luck was all I was to you

All I was was just another game for you to play
A pretty little trinket like a photo on display
All I was was everything you wanted me to be
And now all I am is wonderin’ why you walked away from me

I replay every second, every moment in my mind
Looking at the details hoping for a clue to find
Looking for a taste of you to ease my troubled mind
But all I can see is just your nothings left for me to find

All I was was just another game for you to play
A stupid little trinket on your shelf all tucked away
All I was was everything you wanted me to be
And now all I am is wonderin’ why you walked away from me

Every night I pray to God for just a bit of sleep
I wish on every single star to heal me way down deep
But seems like all i ever do is not get over you
And I’m tired of all this aching that keeps goin’ through and through

I’m wonderin’ when that day will come when I keep movin’ on
I’m wonderin’ when you won’t be there in every single song
I’m wonderin’ when that day will come when i can set me free
And when i can finally forgive you for what you did to me

All I ever was just another game for you to play
A pretty little trinket like a photo on display
All I was was everything you wanted me to be
And now all I am is wonderin’ why you walked away from me

Yeah now all I am is wonderin’ why you walked away from me

    Rain Check by Melodie Yvonne

A rain check on my moral gain
Will not be good another day
You grow & learn & let in change
Or else you wilt & fade away

I know ‘cause I got way off track
Got stuck in place a while back
And now I’ve got to get me movin’
    Got to get myself a’groovin’

Got to find the hope I lost
I’m in too deep, my soul’s the cost
And I’m no longer one to lose
I’m not the one that’s all confused

I’ll not sit here & waste away
While you stay gone another day
I’m not the one that’s taking flight
Now I’m the one that’s here to fight

A rain check on our moral gain
Will not be good another day
We grow & learn & let in change
Or else we’ll wilt & fade away

  • You On Repeat

You On Repeat by Melodie Yvonne

I loved your heart there from the start but soon we came undone
We drank and raged most every day until it wasn’t fun
But if we could erase history and relive it all again
I’d rewind every second and replay until the end

I’d follow you around the world just hoping for a glimpse
My butterflies would flip-flop at the thought of just a chance
But this time I’d say all those words I never got to say
I’d be walkin’ right behind you ‘stead of walkin’ right away

If we could erase history and relive it all again
I’d rewind every second and replay until the end
I’d dance through all the good times and I’d sway through every heartache
Then I’d put you on repeat so we’d still be together always

I wouldn’t run from thunderclouds that never even rained
I’d open my umbrella and I’d shield you from the pain
I wouldn’t need to say those words I never got to say
‘Cause I’d follow you down Main with love written across my face

If we could erase history and relive it all again
I’d rewind every second and replay until the end
I’d dance through all the good times and I’d sway through every heartache
Then I’d put you on repeat so we’d still be together always
