Words from a gonzoesque life in an oh so gonzoless world

  • Distraction

Originally published online March 12, 2017 & in the print collection Photographic Memories: Deux Mille Dix-Sept — available here

I’d sure love to be your distraction
    Somebody else’s dubious attraction
I’d love to be somebody’s trigger
A wreck on the tracks, baffled eyes gettin’ bigger

I’ll be something blue, something borrowed
But just don’t expect me to be there tomorrow
I’ll be what you want me to be
But just for a while ‘cause lonely I’m free

Just give me some time, some time to be mine
If you go too fast, I’ll fall behind
Give me some time, some time to unwind
Or you just won’t like this mess that you find

You look at me like I’m some candy
And I’ll be so sweet until you can’t stand me
You look at me like I’m for real
It’s just for this moment ‘cause now I can’t feel

You look at me like I’m your savior
Well, I got news, I’m all bad behavior
And I wish you were here in this moment
Somethin’ about you makes me wanna own it

Just give me some time, some time to be mine
If you go too fast, I’ll fall behind
Give me some time, some time to unwind
I’ll run ahead if you fall in line

Just give me some time, some time to be mine
If you go too fast, I’ll fall behind
Just give me some time, some time to unwind
Don’t burn too bright, we’ll run out of time

I’d sure love to have a distraction
Somebody to be my dubious attraction
I’ll be what you want me to be
But just for a while cause lonely I’m free

  • All These Wicked Things

Originally published online March 3, 2017 & in the print collection Photographic Memories: Deux Mille Dix-Sept — available here

Empty spaces, writhing faces carried in the darkness
Images that jump to life my momma swore were harmless
Now these evil faces dance again before my eyes
My scream is caught inside my soul, my body’s paralyzed

Insomnia’s the only savior from these wicked dreams
My paranoia is the truth ‘cause nothing’s what it seems
These wars I fight inside myself, I fight them all alone
And all these wicked things I’ve seen have found themselves a home

I’m bound by superstition, lucky numbers are my signs
You dance across my grave, and leave my broken soul behind
My belly’s really icky, right side hurts from top to bottom
This apathetic addict’s soul’s infection’s turned me rotten

Now insomnia’s the only savior from these wicked dreams
My paranoia is the truth ‘cause nothing’s what it seems
These wars I fight inside myself, I fight them all alone
And all these wicked things I’ve seen have found themselves a home

All these wicked things I’ve seen have found themselves a home
All these wicked things I’ve seen, they’ve found themselves a home

  • Catching-Up

    Hey, Friends!

I just wanted to take a moment to check in and thank you all for joining me here. This new space I’ve started is dedicated entirely to my poetry. My visual artwork and concert adventures will still live over at melodieyvonne.com, but this site is where I’ll be gathering and sharing my literary art.

I’ve begun from the very start of my online poetry journey, and I’m moving forward through the years. That means you’ll see a lot of extra posts coming through right now as I catch everything up. Once I’ve finished bringing the past into the present, the poetry pace will slow down, and I’ll excitedly begin to share brand new pieces with you.

Thank you for supporting me through this process. It means the world to have you along for the ride. I can’t wait to move forward together into new work, new journeys, and everything that’s yet to come.

    Ever yours, Melodie Yvonne

  • Be With Me

These times have changed, but they ain’t changing me
No matter who’s leadin’ my soul is still free
Ain’t nothing can touch me if I don’t let it
and I’ll spread my words until every soul gets it

Don’t be alone when you could be with me
Weird, wild, and crazy, just be who you’ll be
No judgment here, and no fear of acceptance
We’ll love you for you as long as you let us

These times have sure changed, but they won’t change me
No matter who’s leadin’ my soul is still free
Ain’t nothin’ can touch you if you don’t let it
So let’s spread our words until every soul gets it

My politician’s not better than yours
They’re nothing but flabby flesh puppeted whores
So stop all this fussing, no fighting, no biting
Let’s unite ourselves for the causes worth fighting

Don’t be alone when you could be with me
Weird, wild, and crazy, just be who we’ll be
No judgment here, and no fear of acceptance
We’ll all love each other as long as we let us

These times have changed, but they ain’t changin’ me
We’re our own leaders let’s choose to be free
Ain’t nothin’ can touch us if we don’t let it
So let’s spread our song until every soul gets it

Let’s spread our song until every soul gets it
and our lil words make love conquer the wretched

Don’t be alone when you could be with me
Weird, wild, and crazy just be who you’ll be
Spark up that fire and set your soul free
And I’ll love you forever as long as you let me

I’ll love you forever as long as you let me
So don’t be alone be with me

  • The One I Want The Most

Originally published online Feb 27, 2017 & in the print collection Photographic Memories: Deux Mille Dix-Sept — available here

    You’re everything I needed that I didn’t really want
I just don’t like your kind of guy, the kind that needs to flaunt
I didn’t want to know you and I didn’t want to care
But now I’m stuck here with regrets that permeate the air

You beat me to the punch line
You beat me in this race
You left me all alone all broken, lost, and out of place

Why’d I let you near me when I really shouldn’t dare?
Why’d I try to help you when you didn’t really care?
Why’d I fall for you in such an inconvenient way?
I know the type of girl I am, I’m not the type who stays

You beat me to the punch line
You beat me in this race
You left me all alone embarrassed tear stains on my face

Now you’ve left me fuddled, and you’re nothing but a ghost
I never wanted you, but you’re the one I want the most
And though I never really even wanted you to care
I’d take it all away for one more chance to have you near

You beat me to the punch line
You beat me in this race
Now I’m just a low life and a second place disgrace

You beat me to the punch line
You beat me in this race
And I’d take it all away for one more chance to see your face

  • Outta My Head

Originally published online Feb 25, 2017 & in the print collection Photographic Memories: Deux Mille Dix-Sept — available here

Get outta my head, get outta my head
I’ll forgive what you said, just get outta my head

All that I wanted was kinda to touch you
All that you wanted was kinda a mess too
We came together and could have it made
If we stayed together, but we couldn’t stay

Get outta my head, get outta my head
I’ll forgive what you did, just get outta my head

The sun and the sun just can’t be together
‘Cause then who’ll be left in cantankerous weather
Hiding behind the clouds we bring on us
But keeping apart, my god, what will it cost us?

Get outta my mind, get outta my mind
Whatever you find, just get outta my mind
I swear I’ll believe everything that you said
Just please let me go, and get outta my head

Can you really feel this mental obsession?
Is it feelin’ real or keepin’ you guessin’?
Tryin’ to trust my mind and what’s in it
But it’s so damn full of bullshit unrequited

We won’t get together if we don’t start talkin’
But I’m scared to death and I done started walkin’
You wanna catch up better quicken your pace
‘Cause my feet will catch fire when my mind sees your face

Get outta my head, get outta my head
Forgive what I said, and get outta my head
Give me salvation from what I can’t find
Just please let me go, and get outta my mind

I’m just not quite sure you’d love someone like me
This love for myself doesn’t even come free
I pay with my heart and my soul every day
If you’d gave me a chance I might have had it made

Get outta my mind, get outta my mind
You’re not gonna like the things that you find
You’re not gonna wanna be one of mine
So please let me go, and get outta my mind

Get outta my head, get outta my head
It’s too late to feel all these things I’ve not said
I want you to free me, and leave me for dead
So please let me go, and get out of my head

  • Staring Right Straight In The Sun

Originally published online Feb 24, 2017 & in the print collection Photographic Memories: Deux Mille Dix-Sept — available here

I’m staring right straight in the sun
Wondering what on earth I’ve done
and now I guess you’ll never know me
I just wanted you to own me

    Empty is as empty does
You swept me underneath your rug
You fall behind, I run in place
Hoping just to glimpse your face

    Hopeless is as hopeless does
I’ll make it like it never was
and I’ll erase me from your history
Hoping that you won’t forget me

Staring right straight in the sun
Wondering what on earth I’ve done
and now I guess you’ll never know me
I just wanted you to own me

Staring right straight off in space
I let my mind eclipse your face
Just shadows of the you that knew me
Guess you thought you couldn’t lose me

    Lonesome is as lonesome does
I swept me underneath my rug
I’m nothing now but broken memories
Out of tune and off key melodies

    Empty is as empty does
You ran ahead, I fell in love
and now we’re just too far off track
I run away, and don’t look back

I’m staring right straight in the sun
I’m wondering what the hell I’ve done
and now I guess you never knew me
Guess you’re just not use to losing

Staring right straight off in space
I let my mind eclipse your face
Just shadows left of you that knew me
Guess you thought you couldn’t lose me

  • A You Addict

Originally published online Feb 23, 2017 & in the print collection Photographic Memories: Deux Mille Dix-Sept — available here

My mind’s lost the war on drugs, and you’re the drug for me
Heroin’s got nothing on your frank philosophy
My heart’s twisted from your blood that courses through my veins
It’s time for you to set me free before I go insane

You weave a politician’s tapestry of charm and lies
You see me for the prey I am despite my strong disguise
You let me wander only just an arm’s length out of reach
And if I try to run away you tighten up that leash

Second best was all I ever was to you at all
A safety net to catch you every time you start to fall
But now my heart is wearing out and leaking like a sieve
You’ve bled me dry, and all you’ve got is all I’ve left to give

My mind’s lost the war on drugs, and you’re the drug for me
Heroin’s got nothing on your frank philosophy
My heart’s twisted from your blood that courses through my veins
It’s time for you to set me free before I go insane

Well, now our end is growing near, it’s time for me to go
I’m really good at leavin’ but it hurts more than you know
We both know that my silly dreams were just not meant to be
So please release this empty bag of flesh and set me free

My mind’s lost the war on drugs, and you’re the drug for me
Heroin’s got nothing on your frank philosophy
My heart’s twisted from your blood that courses through my veins
And it’s time for you to set me free before I go insane

Originally published online Feb 21, 2017 & in the print collection Photographic Memories: Deux Mille Dix-Sept — available here

I was what you saw in her
    I was in her eyes
    That fleshy bag of meat
    was just a me disguise

    I was Hunter Thompson
    I was Steadman too
    I was everything you wanted
    packaged wrong for you

    I was good intentions
    Hers the road to hell
but you skipped along right down her path
    until you tripped and fell

I was there to pick you up
    There to dust you off
but the second you felt better
    a pirate stole your heart

I was there to watch you fall
    cracked apart again
I was there to watch you
    through my shattered rosy lens

I’m still here to pick you up
    Here to dust you off
but I’ve built a wall around my heart
    with double bolted locks

    I’m still everything you want
    packaged wrong for you
but now my rosy lens is capped
She’s me and I am you

    Twenty-two steps to leaving you
    It’s what I am, it’s what I do
    Twenty-two steps to leaving you
Now I’m gone, and now we’re through

    One, two, three
    Walk over me
    Two, three, four
    Shut the door
    Five, six
    You’re such a bitch
    Seven, eight
    FUCK your fate
    Nine, ten
    Your life’s a sin
    Eleven, twelve
    Go to Hell

    One, two, three
    I can’t breathe
    Two, three, four
    I’m on the floor

    Thirteen, fourteen
    This is routine
    Fifteen, sixteen
    Wish you’d just leave
    Seventeen, eighteen
    Wipe the slate clean
    Nineteen, Twenty
    FUCK your money
    Twenty-one
    I’m on the run
    Twenty-two
    And FUCK you too

    One, two, three
    You’re over me
    Two, three, four
    I’m not your whore
    Five, six
    Suck your own dick
    Lucky seven
    You’ll be beggin’

    Twenty-two steps to leaving you
Now I’m gone, and now we’re through
    Twenty-two steps to leaving you
Is twenty-one more than I should do

I love you, but now we’re through
