Words from a gonzoesque life in an oh so gonzoless world

No Change for a Dollar

This piece will be in the upcoming collection Photographic Memories: Nein – available here soon

No Change for a Dollar

I wish I had back every cent that I spent on you
I wish I had back every second that you led me through
I wish I had back every time I wondered what to do
And I wish I had back every ounce of me I spent on you

I wish I had back all the pieces of my heart you took
You broke them off without buying just like a common crook
I wish I hadn’t served myself up like an open book
And I wish I could undo the way I fell with just one look

If I had a monkey’s paw I’d wish you all away
If I had a genie’s lamp I’d wish for better days
If I had a four leaf clover I’d wish luck my way
But all I got’s a Bible and I don’t know what to pray

So, if you ever think of me I just wish that you wouldn’t
And if you’re somehow missin’ me I really think you shouldn’t
‘Cause if you ever come back I’m real sorry I just couldn’t
‘Cause I know now your coin’s double-headed and your nickel’s wooden

I wish I had back every cent that I spent on you
I wish I had back every second that you led me through
I wish I had back every time I wondered what to do
And I wish I had back every ounce of me I spent on you
