Words from a gonzoesque life in an oh so gonzoless world

See Me For Me

Originally published online April 25, 2017 & in the print collection Photographic Memories: Deux Mille Dix-Sept — available here

See me for the me I am when I am all alone
See not just the me I was, but see the me that’s grown
Don’t just love me for the things you think that I could be
Love me for me even when I’m lost and I can’t see

Don’t put me on a pedestal ’cause I’ll just fall right off
Don’t elevate me for all of these things that I am not
Just leave me down on level ground so you can look and see
Just what I am and all the little things that make me me

See me for the me I am when I am all alone
See not just the me I was but see the me that’s grown
Don’t just love me for the things you think that I could be
Love me for me even when I’m scared and I can’t breathe

Don’t flatter me with compliments, I’ve heard them all before
I guess the thing I’m looking for is just a little more
And I can’t take this constant passionless dull apathy
You gotta find your happiness, it can’t all come from me

See me for the me I am when I am all alone
See not just the me I was, but see the me that’s grown
Don’t just love me for the things you think that I could be
Love me for me just enough to know to set me free

Oh please love me just enough to know you need to set me free
