Words from a gonzoesque life in an oh so gonzoless world

Write

Originally published online July 8, 2017 & in the print collection Photographic Memories: Deux Mille Dix-Sept — available here

Dedicated to Vernie Long ❤ ❤ ❤

“Write” is what’s emblazoned here upon this shy book cover
“Write” is what is foremost in my thoughts above all other
“Write” has got me into trouble and has kept me clean
And it’s “Write” that keeps me sane in here when all the world’s obscene

Words that flow right off my hand fly faster than no other
I can’t just let you see right in, these words give me some cover
So if you’re gonna dive right in then love me like no other
‘Cause I spend my time just writin’ and I’m done with endless fodder

“Write’s” the word that Vernie passed to me through Nel’s kind hand
So I’m just gonna keep on writing all that you can stand
Take my words for what they are or take them how you want them
But remember they’re my children and just let them know you love them

Words that flow right off my hand fly faster than no other
I can’t just let you see right in, these words give me some cover
So if you’re gonna dive right in then love me like no other
‘Cause I need a jolt of passion not an unrequited lover

“Write” is what’s emblazoned here upon this shy book cover
“Write” is what is foremost in my thoughts above all other
“Write” has got me into trouble and has kept me clean
And it’s “Write” that keeps me sane in here when all the world’s obscene
Oh yes it’s “Write” that keeps me sane in here when all the world’s obscene
