Words from a gonzoesque life in an oh so gonzoless world

I’m A Real Shell

Originally published online May 13, 2017 & in the print collection Photographic Memories: Deux Mille Dix-Sept — available here

Are you a real person, or are you just a shell?
Sent here from heaven, or sent straight from hell?
Will you take me with you to climb up this mountain,
Or leave me back down in the ditch where I cower down?

Are you a real person, or are you just a shell?
Don’t know you at all, or do I know you well?
Thinkin’ for sure time would kill all this wonder,
But right on back here I am crashing like thunder

Are you a real person, or are you just a shell?
Why do I give a shit? Why can’t I tell?
There’s gotta be somethin’ deep in me that’s fell
And I bury it deep so that no one can tell

Are you a real person, or are you just a shell?
Were you sent here to me from heaven or hell?
I just plain don’t care no more, now can you tell?
My bottomless pit of a heart’s not for sale

Are you a real person, or are you just a shell?
Sent here from heaven, or sent straight from hell?
Walked straight away hoping absence would fix me
But all I am doing is wonderin’ if you missed me

Are you a real person, or are you just a shell?
‘Cause I’m not a person now, buried as well
I’ve not been a person since that time that I fell
No longer a person, now I’m just a shell
