Words from a gonzoesque life in an oh so gonzoless world

The One I Want The Most

Originally published online Feb 27, 2017 & in the print collection Photographic Memories: Deux Mille Dix-Sept — available here

You’re everything I needed that I didn’t really want
I just don’t like your kind of guy, the kind that needs to flaunt
I didn’t want to know you and I didn’t want to care
But now I’m stuck here with regrets that permeate the air

You beat me to the punch line
You beat me in this race
You left me all alone all broken, lost, and out of place

Why’d I let you near me when I really shouldn’t dare?
Why’d I try to help you when you didn’t really care?
Why’d I fall for you in such an inconvenient way?
I know the type of girl I am, I’m not the type who stays

You beat me to the punch line
You beat me in this race
You left me all alone embarrassed tear stains on my face

Now you’ve left me fuddled, and you’re nothing but a ghost
I never wanted you, but you’re the one I want the most
And though I never really even wanted you to care
I’d take it all away for one more chance to have you near

You beat me to the punch line
You beat me in this race
Now I’m just a low life and a second place disgrace

You beat me to the punch line
You beat me in this race
And I’d take it all away for one more chance to see your face
