Words from a gonzoesque life in an oh so gonzoless world

A You Addict

Originally published online Feb 23, 2017 & in the print collection Photographic Memories: Deux Mille Dix-Sept — available here

My mind’s lost the war on drugs, and you’re the drug for me
Heroin’s got nothing on your frank philosophy
My heart’s twisted from your blood that courses through my veins
It’s time for you to set me free before I go insane

You weave a politician’s tapestry of charm and lies
You see me for the prey I am despite my strong disguise
You let me wander only just an arm’s length out of reach
And if I try to run away you tighten up that leash

Second best was all I ever was to you at all
A safety net to catch you every time you start to fall
But now my heart is wearing out and leaking like a sieve
You’ve bled me dry, and all you’ve got is all I’ve left to give

My mind’s lost the war on drugs, and you’re the drug for me
Heroin’s got nothing on your frank philosophy
My heart’s twisted from your blood that courses through my veins
It’s time for you to set me free before I go insane

Well, now our end is growing near, it’s time for me to go
I’m really good at leavin’ but it hurts more than you know
We both know that my silly dreams were just not meant to be
So please release this empty bag of flesh and set me free

My mind’s lost the war on drugs, and you’re the drug for me
Heroin’s got nothing on your frank philosophy
My heart’s twisted from your blood that courses through my veins
And it’s time for you to set me free before I go insane
